The Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels and the Martyrs, Rome

Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels and the Martyrs is one of Rome’s most fascinating churches, located in the historic Piazza della Repubblica. Unlike many churches in Rome, its extraordinary interior was built within the remains of the ancient Baths of Diocletian, giving visitors a unique glimpse into both Roman and Christian history.

The basilica was designed in part by the famous Renaissance artist Michelangelo, who adapted the enormous ancient Roman baths into a Christian place of worship in the 16th century. The contrast between the ancient structure and later Renaissance architecture makes the basilica particularly remarkable.

One of its most interesting features is the meridian line, created in the 18th century by astronomer Francesco Bianchini. Running across the floor, it was used to study the movement of the sun and help determine the exact timing of noon.
