Fontana dell’Acqua Paola, Rome

Fontana dell'Acqua Paola, also known as the Fontanone del Gianicolo, is one of Rome’s most impressive monumental fountains. Located on Gianicolo Hill, the fountain offers not only beautiful Baroque architecture but also spectacular views across the city.

Completed in 1614 during the reign of Pope Paul V, the fountain was built to mark the restoration of the ancient Aqua Traiana aqueduct, which brought water into Rome from the surrounding countryside.

The fountain features a grand façade made from white marble and stone, with five large arches through which water flows into a wide basin below. Its imposing design makes it feel almost like the entrance to a grand palace rather than a traditional fountain.

Today, the Fontana dell’Acqua Paola is a popular stop for visitors exploring Gianicolo Hill, particularly around sunset when the panoramic views over Rome are especially beautiful.
