Lake Kawaguchi, a famous spot for viewing upside-down Mt. Fuji.
Lake Kawaguchi offers stunning reflections of Mt. Fuji on calm days, creating the iconic “upside-down Fuji” view admired by visitors worldwide.
Lake Kawaguchi, where the Tenparu sails, is famous for its upside-down Fuji, as sung in the song, “The waterless estuary sea, buried beneath the lofty peaks of Mt. Fuji, casts its shadow.”
At 839 meters above sea level, it’s 110 meters higher than Lake Ashi in Hakone, with a circumference of 20 kilometers and a maximum depth of 25 meters. It’s the second largest of the Fuji Five Lakes after Lake Yamanaka, and is filled with a tropical brightness.
The lake’s waters are home to carp, crucian carp, smelt, and black bass, making it a popular tourist destination throughout the year. In the middle of the lake is Unoshima, the only island among the Fuji Five Lakes. Enjoy the upside-down Fuji, which can only be seen when weather conditions are favorable.
