What makes the monument particularly fascinating is the continuous spiral relief carved around the column. The detailed scenes depict Roman soldiers, battles, military camps and events from the campaigns against Dacia, providing a remarkable visual record of Roman military life.

Standing around 30 metres high, the column was originally topped by a statue of Emperor Trajan. Today, a statue of Saint Peter stands at the top, added in the 16th century.
